The general steps in our approach to training for mastery
1. Commitment
We meet to commit the team to learning goals through hands-on experience
2.
Self-study
You and your team study concepts and tools with support from us as needed
3. application
We meet and apply concepts and tools together on your own current issues
4.
Progress
We assess mastery of everyone and ensure simultaneous progress of the team
Training without lecturing
We strongly believe that people learn best when executing real Transformation & Innovation activities. Also, it is often a nightmare to gather together all relevant persons in an organisation for several days of seminars. Instead we use a flipped learning approach: All theory, tools methods etc. are provided for individual self-study beforehand, so we can use all the time we have together to apply the new knowledge to real issues in your organisation. Together.
Training for mastery
Our core principle in training for mastery is to allow each person the type and amount of training they need to master each part of the training topic (e.g. design thinking, concept scaling or something third).
No-one progresses to the next part until they have achieved mastery - everyone progresses with different amounts of effort, but each time the group meets, everyone will be at the same level. This way, we ensure alignment of the team and effective use of the time spent together.
The growth mindset
Transformation, disruption and Innovation is not just about technical challenges e.g. mastering digitisation.
It is about effectively absorbing and applying many kinds of new knowledge - knowledge about changing customer trends, new technologies and new market trends. To do so, you need a growth mindset in your organisation. A growth mindset enables adaptive learning for everyone through quick experimentation without jeopardising what already works. In this way, you can responsibly prepare your organisation for whatever the future brings - not just what talking heads and pundits currently happen to preach.
Pioneered by Stanford University
The growth mindset and adaptive learning techniques were pioneered by the PERTS group at Stanford University. To date, it has been applied to more than 1 million students at various levels. Ampersand has adopted this approach to train for mastery of Transformation & Innovation, as it is currently the most effective and well-documented approach to train for mastery.
The evidence from Stanford University's research is clear: the growth-mindset have measurably raised performance, decreased dropout rates, and reduced achievement gaps in teams. See more at PERTS
